What are drones?

Drones or unmanned Aereal Vehicles (UAVs) are crafts that can perform certain tasks, and they can vary in size. They have a high level of autonomy because they are usually controlled by a remote or a mobile application. Advanced ones can also rely on sensors and detectors to move. Drones are gaining popularity now in different fields and they have become talk of the hour.

Applications and uses of drones

There are many uses of drones, and many more uses of drone technology are expected to come out.

1. Military Use: military use of drones goes back to the second world war when the British and US forces used them. However, nowadays they are basic worldwide. They can perform sensitive military missions and operations successfully.

2. Express Delivery: drones can deliver packages and goods from stores to people. They can also transport groceries and food instead of delivery people or cars.

3. Emergency Rescue: drones can reach accident locations that are hard for humans to reach. For example, in cases of avalanches or drowning under water, drones are sent to assist in the rescue and to look for people in the snow.

4. Outer Space: the X-37B UAV is a US Air Force drone , like a space ship, going around the earth; and it is considered the longest flight from a drone.

5. Historical Conservation: we can recreate lost historical places thanks to drone technology. Drones can draw 3D maps of ancient historical places so that researchers are able to learn more about the civilization and architecture then.

6. Conservation Uses: it means wildlife conservation by tracking different animals to know more about their life and the ecosystem in general. They proved to be efficient because they can reach inaccessible places difficult for humans to reach and explore.

7. Reforestation Uses: interestingly, drones can help us restore our forests. How? By seeds and fertilizers on forests previously destroyed by fires. This technology can help us regain green forests quickly.

8. Medical Uses: medical supplies are now being delivered by drones, and this has saved lots of lives. For example, rural areas in Alaska are hard to reach, so drones are the answer. In addition, they can deliver organ transplants donated for people from a hospital to another safely. This is a revolutionary use because it has saved time which is vital to save a life.

9. Personal Use: drone market is now open for anyone. Customers purchase civilian drones for purposes like photography, recording, film-making, gaming and other recreational activities. But there is a high rate of drone collisions or crashes, so there should be stricter laws and restrictions.

Drone Technology cons

Drones have short time flight and can easily be affected by the weather. In general, flying time is 30 minutes before you need to recharge them. Also, you should know that this time is less when there are strong winds. Bad weather conditions like rain and wind prevent you from using it. Even fog can be bad and causes problems.

 Another problem is interference which may occur because it uses wireless control. This is similar to what might happen when you use your mobile phone, Bluetooth or WI-FI network. In addition to the previous cons, drones are used for police surveillance purposes in some countries. Although this seems quite interesting, some people are not comfortable with this surveillance issue as they link it to privacy violation. A serious disadvantage is that it can cause harmful accidents when flown near airlines. If drawn into the engine of the plane, a serious failure may occur.

In summary, dispite of all the above disadvantages, drone technology is going to evolve.
